• A Mettam Liberal Government will invest $112.5m to duplicate Shelley Bridge.
• The duplication will remove the bottleneck along Leach Hwy, save time, and get commuters to work and home to their families faster and more safely.
• The commitment is evidence of the strong advocacy by Amanda Spencer-Teo for her community.
A Mettam Liberal Government will invest $112.5 million, to duplicate Shelley Bridge, it was announced today by Libby Mettam and Amanda Spencer-Teo.
“The WA Liberals are committed to investing in critical infrastructure that improves connectivity, reduces congestion, and supports economic growth,” said Ms Mettam.
“That is why a future Liberal Government will invest $112.5 million towards the duplication of Shelley Bridge.
“Shelley Bridge has long been a source of frustration for locals and anyone travelling anywhere between Fremantle and the Perth Airport.
“This is a shovel ready, long-overdue project which will significantly ease congestion on Leach Highway and local roads which have been left to carry the burden from those trying to avoid this bottleneck.”
With more than 50,000 vehicle movements every day, the bridge is the only merge point where Leach Hwy reduces from 3 down to 2 lanes each way. This duplication will remove the bottleneck, and keep commuters moving and will provide a much needed crossing point for cyclists and pedestrians.
Ms Mettam said the commitment to the Shelley Bridge duplication was evidence of Amanda Spencer-Teo’s ability to listen and deliver for her local community.
“Since October, Amanda has been running a petition building support for the duplication of Shelley Bridge to address safety issues,” said Ms Mettam.
“This commitment is a direct result of her advocacy and evidence she can deliver for a seat which has been neglected by WA Labor.
“In fact, the only solution offered by Labor has been to install yet another set of traffic lights along Leach Highway - project not supported by major stakeholders and the community.”
Amanda Spencer-Teo welcomed the commitment to widening Shelley Bridge.
“Within weeks, my petition broke 1,000 signatures highlighting the community’s support for this long overdue duplication of Shelley Bridge,” said Ms Spencer-Teo.
“This commitment is great news for not only those living in the Riverton electorate – but for anyone travelling to and from Fremantle, Curtin University the Welshpool industrial area and the Perth Airport.
“A duplicated Shelley Bridge will enhance road safety and ensure people spend more time at home with their families and less time stuck in traffic.
“Residents and businesses alike deserve reliable infrastructure, and this commitment will ensure that Shelley Bridge remains a safe, efficient, and future-proofed crossing for decades to come.”
The WA Liberals will work with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to secure the remaining funding needed to deliver this vital project.
